seriously

Every month, I am posting my thoughts about at least one more serious issue, that we should all TALK about, here is the list so far :

In October I blogged about Domestic and Family Abuse. It can’t be said enough that it’s happening everywhere and it can happen to anyone. Silence helps the abusers. Talk about it!

In November, I joined the great (mommy blogger) breastfeeding debate. I am not in one or the other camp. But public breastfeeding should be normal, not difficult or awkward for the mums who are doing it.

In December, I wanted to remind people to NOT buy pets for Christmas unless they are really really really sure that’s what the whole family wants. Too many ‘Christmas presents’  arrive in the shelters once the first excitement is over.

After the Christmas holidays I had scheduled a post about depression because for some people these are difficult times. Sadly, January came with natural disaster and personal tragedies in the blogging community and proved me right..

Why I am doing this :
In September 2010, only about a month or so after starting this blog, I had the surprise of overnight internet fame when I found myself on wordpress.com’s “Freshly Pressed” pages with a post about (gruesome) classic fairy tales.
8000 hits, 150 comments, how do you follow that up?

I am not and I don’t want to be one of the rockstar mommy bloggers. I don’t want hundreds of followers, I’d rather be read by far less, but regularly and get actual feedback. But  it feels good to do something, at least once per month, that goes beyond giving my 2 cents on this or that news item or simply and post randomly about stuff in my life and my awesome family. So I created the ’cause of the month’ category. It may be some issue that is officially declared as worth celebrating or commemorating that month, it may be a campaign that or a subject that touched me personally enough to want to blog about it. Talk about it. And hear about it.
Lots of personal and mommy blogs are engaged in one cause or the other. I am not an activist or otherwise politically engaged in a particular battle.
But I believe we should all do our part to make this world a better place.

  1. This is really great. I’ve somehow started doing a similar thing on my blog – not quite as deep but real issues that need to be talked about. Good on you!

    • Thanks. I always think that even if you don’t have a voice that is heard by many, if you help only ONE person with what you say, with advice or help you offer, you make the world a bit of a better place. And who would not want that ? :)
(It really doesn’t have to be particularly ‘deep’ – I still want my blog to be fun! – but I feel it’s good to do ‘something’.. sometimes)

  2. Good idea. I don’t manage many entirely serious posts but one a month would be a good target. Did your dogs come to you via a shelter?

    • My husband got the old ladydog from the shelter, but we got the dogthing where.I.never.wanted.to.buy.a.dog. Ever. Petshop.
Although we had planned the dog, getting Dogthing from a shop was an impulsive ‘omg-heSoCuuute’-buy that I really do not recommend anyone.
The kind of buy you WILL regret. Hell, we certainly did! But although his playful destruction has cost us already a fortune and I am personally a bit overwhelmed by his sheer size.. He’s part of the family and you can’t bring any of those back to a shop either, right ? (or can you, cuz I would be interested maybe.. ?)
